Torqit: Choosing the right exhaust for Australian Conditions
The Finke Desert Race has the reputation of being one of the most difficult off-road courses, so what better place to hold a race than Australia’s very own red sea. This year’s Finke Desert Race is one to get excited about, however the tough terrain and weather conditions of the Northern Territory (and so much more of Australia) can put serious stress on your vehicle, so it’s important to ensure your exhaust system on your 4×4 is suited to the vast Australian elements in this beautiful country of ours.
As fellow tourers would know, the elements that your vehicle is exposed to can vary considerably from extreme heat in the Northern Territory to the freezing cold in the High Country. It has taken a lot of research and development but Torqit have successfully engineered the perfect exhaust to suit all elements of the Australian Landscape.
Doing extensive research before purchasing any exhaust system is recommended as they can be an expensive investment if you choose wrong. Before deciding on an exhaust system, consider the weather conditions your 4WD will be exposed to. If you live in a hot and dry part of Australia, you consider a low heat conducting stainless system, that isn’t going to overheat and crack. When looking at systems, consider the thickness; a thinner stainless is more likely to crack. If you live in a high humidity area, by the ocean or if you back your rig into the water when lowering your boat you will definitely need a stainless steel system to avoid corrosion. However, keep in mind that not all stainless steel is the same, while T409 stainless is fairly corrosion resistant, you should consider an exhaust made of T304 stainless which is higher grade and corrosion resistant which means your system will last longer.

Tinny Sound Removed
Ensure you ask about the wall thickness of a system before making a purchase, as it is a myth that all stainless steel systems sound tinny. Many systems available on the market only have a wall thickness of 0.7mm. The thinner the steel, the tinnier it will sound. The thickness not only suggests the strength, it also alters the sound that is produced. It is very unlikely that you would be able to crack a Torqit system, as they feature both internal and external welds, heavy-duty bracketry and a steel flex bellow. You would have to be hitting every rut at great speed throughout the entire 460km Finke race course. There should be a prize for anyone that could crack a Torqit exhaust at Finke! In saying that, if you were to crack a stainless steel exhaust the fix is fairly straight forward; you would only need a mig welder and stainless steel wire.
When buying an exhaust price is a major factor to consider, however a higher price tag doesn’t necessarily mean better quality. Firstly, consider your environment, the exhaust metal grade, the wall thickness and the weld quality. Once you have researched these, then compare this to price. Think of your exhaust as an investment, a good quality exhaust should last more than 10 years.
